AYD is pleased to announce that Doris Crouse-Mays, President of the Virginia AFL-CIO, will be a guest at our July 18th meeting at Memphis BBQ in Crystal City. Ms. Crouse-Mays will speak on her experience with the DNC, the importance of getting involved in Charlotte this year, and how going to Charlotte can open up opportunities for attendees.

Biography of Ms. Crouse-Mays
Doris Crouse-Mays started her Union career with the Communications Workers of America. Her first political campaign was for Congressman Rick Boucher, who unseated a sixteen year incumbent. .
Doris worked for the ILGWU (now UNITE/HERE) and CWA as an International Organizer. While at CWA, under her leadership, CWA had 4 elections in one year, winning 3 of the 4. As a result, CWA District 2, received the Joe Beirne Award, CWA’s highest award for organizing. In 1998, Doris went to work for the National AFL-CIO.
In 2001, Doris was the statewide coordinator for the Labor Program and Mark Warner was elected Governor and Tim Kaine, as Lt. Governor. In 2003, Doris went to work for the Virginia AFL-CIO as Political Director. Doris led the Labor 2005 program to elect Tim Kaine, Governor of Virginia.
On Feb. 12, 2006, Doris was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Virginia AFL-CIO, the first woman to serve as an executive officer of the Virginia AFL-CIO. In August 2006, Doris was re-elected for a 4 year term.
On August 13, 2010, Doris became the first female to be elected President of the Virginia AFL-CIO. Doris is married to Mike Mays, a Business Agent for Sheetmetal Local 100.
Doris is a member of the Virginia Democratic Party Steering and Central Committee. In 2008, she was elected to the Democratic national Committee.
