It has been more than 16 years since the US Congress passed the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy banning openly gay servicemen and servicewomen from serving our country in the armed forces.
The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) has concluded that since the policy was enacted, more than 9000 service-members have been discharged under this discriminatory policy at a cost of more than 25 billion dollars to US taxpayers.
Furthermore, this policy disproportionately affects young people; “In 2002, 83 percent of those discharged from the Air Force under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” were 18 to 25 years old.” (http://www.hrc.org/issues/military/4884.htm).
Over the course of this policy however, public opinion has shifted overwhelmingly in favor of repeal, and opponents like Sen. Mike Pence (R-IN) have their facts wrong when they say that the American People aren’t supportive of a change.
A Gallup poll taken earlier this month showed that 70% of respondents were supportive of openly gay servicemen and servicewomen serving in the military. A recent CNN poll cited in The Hill found that “A full 78 percent of respondents said that “people who are openly gay or homosexual” should be able to serve in the armed forces. The results are similar to what CNN found in December of 2008 (81 percent) and May of 2007 (79 percent).”
It is time to end this national disgrace of a policy. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell must be repealed this year.
Our very own Senator Webb, a person many young Arlingtonians supported in his bid for the US Senate in 2006, is set to consider in the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Levin/Lieberman amendment which is being attached to the Defense Authorization Bill. This amendment would repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and would take effect after the Pentagon study of how to enact the repeal is completed this December, and the study is subsequently certified by the President, Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Please call Senator Webb and ask him to support the Levin/Lieberman Amendment in the Defense Authorization Bill.
Senator Webb’s office number is: (202) 224-4024
You can also email Senator Webb here: http://webb.senate.gov/contact.cfm
Finally, a parting thought:
Editorial cartoonist, Chan Lowe, who is with the Sun-Sentinel in Southern Florida, drew the following political cartoon which is appropriately critical of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy:

The Arlington Young Democrats have passed unanimously, a resolution stating our opposition to the petition currently being circulated to change Arlington’s form of government. The text of the resolution is as follows:
Whereas a coalition of organizations is circulating a petition to change Arlington’s form of government from the County Manager Plan, which is unique to Arlington, to the County Board Form, and
Whereas the County Board Form would require that local elections be held in magisterial districts, instead of county-wide as under the County Manager Plan, reducing significantly the number of directly-elected county officials who are responsible to each Arlington resident, and
Whereas the County Board Form would require that all members of the County Board and School Board be elected simultaneously, instead of in staggered terms as under the County Manager Plan, which may inhibit long-term planning such as the development the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, Shirlington, and Pentagon and Crystal Cities, and the plans for development of Columbia Pike, and
Whereas the General Assembly of Virginia has enshrined a number of practices in the County Manager Plan of government that Arlington currently enjoys but would be unable to maintain if it changes to the County Board Form, including, inter alia:
Whereas the four counties, Carroll, Grayson, Russell, and Scott, that use the County Board Form are all rural in character and, combined, have less than half of the population of Arlington County, and
Whereas the Arlington County Democratic Committee resolved unanimously on 5 May 2010 to oppose the referendum to adopt the County Board Form of government and to work to persuade Arlington voters not to support the proposed change in government,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Arlington Young Democrats opposes the petition and any resulting referendum to adopt a County Board Form of government, and that Arlington Young Democrats encourages young Arlingtonians not to sign said petition and to vote against the referendum should it qualify, and
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Arlington Young Democrats will publicize its opposition to this petition by all appropriate means, and will dedicate a portion of its political action activities to encouraging fellow young Arlington to join in opposition to the proposed change to Arlington’s form of government.
