The Arlington Young Democrats are hosting multiple fun opportunities this week, starting with tonight’s Career and Networking Happy Hour at Four Courts in Courthouse. Then tomorrow night, our monthly meeting will be something a bit different- the chance to prove your political smarts during AYD’s first Trivia Challenge! The fun wraps up Saturday during the annual Members Only BBQ.

Event-specific details are below, but we can’t wait to see everyone this week and have some much-needed fun.

Lastly, our events’ success are dependent on volunteers. Contact Jen Bodie if you can help out at any event, and be sure to sign up for a BBQ volunteer role and/or to bring a potluck item to share.

And don’t forget our Vice President Max Burns is running for the 8th District Democratic Committee! His election is this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield. Voters must be registered or in line by 10:00 a.m. in order to attend, so arrive early! Contact Max for more information

Our VP, Max Burns, has thrown his hat into the ring and is running to represent Arlington residents as one of the 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee Members- but he needs our help!

Support his candidacy by “Liking” it on Facebook, and invite your friends to help a fellow Young Democrat build our brand across the entire 8th District.

Second Annual Members-Only BBQ  (Saturday, 4 p.m., Virginia Square)

Join AYD members for the second annual members-only BBQ near the Virginia Square metro.  AYD will provide some basic BBQ items (burgers and such), but members are asked to bring a potluck item of their choice. We will also need some volunteers to help with set up, the grill, the check-in table, and clean up.

Please sign up if you can volunteer or would like to bring a potluck item.

The grill will be fired up at 4 p.m., and we’ll be cooking out until 6:30 p.m.

You must be an active member to attend. Please join/renew your AYD membership by Friday, May 17*. If you have questions about your membership status, please contact our membership team.

Terry McAuliffe Happy Hour with Robby Mook (May 20, Courthouse)

Come out next Monday for a special happy hour to meet top members of the Terry McAuliffe campaign along with other Democrats and learn what you can do to keep Virginia blue!

Winning this election will take the support of each and everyone of you, and this is a great chance to get involved.

McAuliffe’s Campaign Manager, and noted top strategist, Robby Mook will be joining us to field your questions, lend his professional expertise winning campaigns, and provide direct insights into the gubernatorial campaign. Mook is the former executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee- where he helped the party pick up several seats- and formerly worked for Hillary Clinton.

YDA National Convention (August 9-11, San Antonio, TX)

Atima Omara-Alwala is running for the Young Democrats of America presidency and she needs our help. Her campaign to bring our chapter’s values to the national level will culminate at the YDA National Convention taking place in San Antonio August 9-11. All AYD members are encouraged to consider attending the annual convention.

The convention is a great opportunity to network with peers from around the country, as well as participate in numerous training sessions. It is a proving ground for up and coming leaders within the democratic party, and a chance for our chapter to showcase our accomplishments on a national stage.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Lauren. We strongly encourage attendees to begin to make travel arrangements early. AYD will be providing subsidies for members’ room and board needs.

Environmental Justice Forum Discussion (April 29, Crystal City)

As part of Environmental Awareness Month, Arlington County Board Member Jay Fissette will lead a Q&A forum on environmental justice, sustainability, and what we can do to make Arlington (and the planet) a little greener. You will also have an opportunity to meet with other activists and learn how to get involved.

April Monthly Meeting

If you’ve been following the news, you know college debt is now the fastest-growing type of debt in America. It’s one of the only kinds of debt you can’t wipe away in a bankruptcy. It’s a growing weight around the necks of current students and recent graduates. Join AYD on Wednesday, April 17th at NRECA for a discussion on America’s college debt addiction and what we can do to build a sustainable education system that gives graduates a future without drowning them in debt. This is a great event to check out if you’re on the way to college or still dealing with the burdens of long-term college debt!

Both Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University chapters of the VA Young Democrats have come together to co-host the 80th Annual VA Young Democrats Convention, to be held at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. We have worked together with the Sheraton to secure discounted rates for room reservation for those dates. There is a limited number of available rooms, so act fast!

Several topic and panel discussion sessions are currently being planned for the Convention, as well as a Campaign Kick-off for the various Democratic candidates for the statewide offices. Check back here for updates on the convention!

An Awards Night Gala is scheduled for that Saturday night, April 20. The Gala is a semi-formal event, and you should RSVP using the above link so as to help the planning committee gauge estimated attendance.
